Catalysts for Lasting Community Change
Thank you for visiting the Junior League of Arlington website!
Whether you are an existing member, a community partner, or are just interested in learning more about the Junior League, we hope that this website will help you learn more about our mission, our vision, and the amazing women who make us a leader in North Texas nonprofits today.
The Junior League of Arlington (JLA) has been serving our community since 1975. In 1982, JLA was admitted to the Association of Junior Leagues International (AJLI) with over 155,000 members in the United States, Canada, Mexico and Great Britain and over 292 Leagues. AJLI reaches out to women of all races, religions, and national origins who demonstrate an interest in and commitment to voluntarism. Our mission is three-fold: we promote voluntarism, develop the potential of women and improve the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers.
Comprised locally of over 450 members, the Junior League of Arlington has given over $2,000,000 and over 1,000,000 volunteer hours to more than 100 agencies. This year we are pleased to provide funds in excess of $45,000 and/or volunteers as we partner with the following organizations: AIDS Outreach/Camp Firelight, All Star Equestrian, Arlington Public Library, Boys and Girls Club of Arlington/T.E.A.M. and SMART Girls programs, Community Partners of Tarrant County/Rainbow Room, Camp Fire/Kith & Kin, Immunization Collaboration of Tarrant County and SafeHaven. Funds are raised through two events each year, “Holiday Magic” and “Tee It Up For Charity”.
We strive to build the self-images of women, young adults and children by addressing issues in our community. Our Community Impact Project, a Back-to-School Fair, is held in August and benefits the children and families of the Arlington Independent School District. In the spring, our “Glass Slipper Boutique” provides prom dresses to young women in our community who otherwise would not be able to attend their High School prom.
Since the purchase of the Center for Community Service in 1993, JLA also provides meeting space at no cost to local 501 (c)(3) organizations and government entities. The secondary purpose of the Center for Community Service is to serve as our League administrative office; here at our headquarters, as well as throughout our service area, we are indeed “women building better communities.”

(view the brochure here)
Since August 1993, the Center has been serving the community by providing meeting space at no cost to local 501(c)(3) organizations and government entities. The center serves as the JLA Headquarters and is home to Leadership Arlington. The Center for Community Service is located at 4002 West Pioneer Parkway. For information about reserving meeting room space and funding request opportunities, please
contact us or call 817-277-9481.
Community Impact Project
BACK-TO-SCHOOL FAIR
JLA hosts a back-to-school fair for AISD students in a qualifying limited-income family. This project is also supported by Arlington ISD and the Arlington community. Students receive free school supplies and various necessary back-to-school services.
Funding and Volunteer Projects
ALL STAR EQUESTRIAN FOUNDATION
For 2011-2012, JLA will provide funds in the amount of $8,158 to this year-round, therapeutic horseback riding program for children of all ages with mental, physical, emotional, and learning disabilities. The program emphasizes the independence and abilities of each rider and provides such benefits as improved muscle strength, balance, trunk and head control and overall gross motor skills. The adaptive tack will improve the therapy rider’s balance and comfort, and make the therapy horses more comfortable and prolong their working life as a therapy horse. In addition, a portable wheelchair ramp will allow every rider, regardless of size or disability, to participate in offsite horse shows and exhibitions. JLA volunteers serve as leaders and side walkers.
AIDS OUTREACH CENTER - CAMP FIRELIGHT
For 2011-2012, JLA will provide funds in the amount of $2,275 to the only program of its kind in Tarrant County to provide health, social and emotional support to children ages 6-12 that are either HIV positive or live in a home with a family member who is HIV positive. Held at Camp Thurman in Arlington, Camp Firelight is a week long day camp where the children who attend are given an opportunity to take part in social and recreational activities in a fun and supervised wholesome environment that they would not have a chance to experience otherwise. JLA volunteers serve as camp counselors.
BOYS & GIRLS CLUB OF ARLINGTON - TEAM PROGRAM
For 2011-2012, JLA will provide funds in the amount of $18,000 to a concentrated, intensive, 8-week program in the Fall and Spring promoting healthy lifestyle choices for 40-60 AISD at-risk girls ages 11-13. The program focuses on increasing self-esteem and self-worth (abstinence from sexual activity is a component of the program). Through JLA funding, the depth of the program is expanded with real-life experiences previously unattainable. JLA volunteers serve as TEAM Mentors.
COMMUNITY PARTNERS OF TARRANT COUNTY - RAINBOW ROOM
For 2011-2012, JLA will provide funds in the amount of $6,000 to the Rainbow Room. This is an on-site pantry that assists the Department of Family and Protective Services workers in meeting their clients’ basic needs for clothing, food and a safe home environment. JLA purchase items such as food, clothing, baby items (ex. cribs, diapers, formula, pack n’ plays) and cleaning supplies. JLA volunteers maintain proper inventory and organization of the Sanford Rainbow Room.
Grants
ARLINGTON PUBLIC LIBRARY
For 2011-2012, JLA will provide funds in the amount of $3,200 to the Arlington Public Library’s literacy program. This program, Arlington Reads, presents an eight-week Math & Science Camp for 1
st through 5
th grade children in order to address the “summer loss” issue which occurs when students do not engage in educational activities during the summer. A total of 80 children experience fun math and science-related activities and experiments. JLA funds purchase math & science supplies for 80 children for 8 weeks.
BOYS & GIRLS CLUB OF ARLINGTON - SMART Girls Program
For 2011-2012, JLA will provide funds in the amount of $5,000 to the Boys and Girls Club SMART Girls program which addresses the issues of healthy attitudes of girls at an early age. The purpose of the program is to provide a casual, friendly environment to help young girls develop and adopt a healthy attitude and lifestyle, as well as to acquire and maintain a positive self-concept. The program is offered at multiple locations for one hour once a week during the school year with additional sessions offered during the summer and holiday breaks. JLA funds assist with educational materials, recreational supplies and training.
CAMP FIRE USA
For 2011-2012, JLA will provide funds in the amount of $4,430 to the Camp Fire USA Kith & Kin program. The program works to improve the quality of child care provided to Arlington’s children, ages 0-5, cared for through informal systems of child care. Kith and Kin care is child care provided by family (kin), friends and neighbors (kith) in their own homes and is the most common type of child care for children under five in the United States. The Kith and Kin program provides free training classes for informal child care providers on early childhood topics. The program also provides technical assistance to participants who wish to become registered with the State, including home visits, program evaluation, mentoring and help with the licensing process. JLA funds assist with GED scholarships, health and safety equipment for homes, children’s books, and educational games.
Volunteer Only Projects
IMMUNIZATION COLLABORATION OF TARRANT COUNTY - SUMMER CLINIC
JLA volunteers serve as event assistants during the summer months. They assist at a one-week low cost immunization clinic for 6,000 Tarrant County children (over 30% are from Arlington). The program is designed to provide low-cost immunizations, educational materials, promotion and incentive materials that will increase the immunization rates in Tarrant County.
SAFEHAVEN OF TARRANT COUNTY - CAMP HEART
JLA volunteers assist with a therapeutic weekend camping experience for 6-12 year old victims of family violence. Camp Heart is held twice a year over a three-day weekend. This innovative camp effectively accelerates the healing process by offering activities in a non-threatening setting with other children who have had similar experiences. Trained volunteers assist in providing therapeutic and recreational game and activities, as well as individual attention to all the children who attend.
Joining the Junior League of Arlington
Each year the JLA welcomes a new group of exceptional women to its "Provisional Class." The purpose of the Provisional Class is to provide an introduction to The Junior League of Arlington (JLA), the Arlington community and the Association of Junior Leagues International (AJLI). Group training programs, speakers, and project experiences are utilized to enhance volunteer and leadership skills. In addition, members of the Provisional Class have the opportunity to create friendships with other Provisionals and current members who serve as advisors to welcome, guide and train the group during their first year.
